One of the feelings universal with all creatures, whether human or animal, is comfort. I have been thinking about this a lot recently within many levels of my life. I saw the video below yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it.
(A quick explination of the video. Carlos, the person singing, was filming a promo video for his upcoming worship CD. Danny, the homeless man, comes up and starts singing with him.)
I have tried to put myself in Carlos' shoes. What would I have done in that situtation? I think I would have stopped singing and talked to the man, but if I am honest with myself, I don't know that I would have spent a lot of time with Danny. I would have been nice, but inside all I would want to do is figure out how to get rid of him and continue on with the shoot. I am glad Carlos' didn't.
In thinking about comfort, I am reminded of Ananias and Saul from Acts 9. Saul (later Paul), who had just been converted on the road to Damascus and was blinded, was staying at a house in town. The Lord told Ananias to go to Saul and lay hands on him so that he may regain his sight.
Think about this for a second. Until that point, Saul was a big, big fan of killing and harming those who followed the Way (Christians). The very reason he was traveling to Damascus was to imprison those who followed the Way (Acts 9:1-2). Ananias, a follower of the Way, was in Damascus and is now being told to go and physically lay hands on the man who was coming to harm him. Charles Swindoll likened that experience to a Jew going to meet with Hitler.
I can't imagine that moment. Talk about being uncomfortable. In Acts 9:13-14, Ananias even seems to question the Lord about what He is asking him to do. Can you relate? I know I can. How often do you know that you are being lead by the Spirit to do something, go somewhere, talk to THAT person?
What a great picture of faith and stepping into what was surely an uncomfortable situation for Ananias. I know I would have been doubting myself. I am so thankful for fellow brothers like Ananias, who heed the Lord's call and are about His business.
Greg.
